UB Art Gallery to present, NET<3, works by Media Study students exploring sociable aesthetics.

BUFFALO, N.Y.-

NET<3 is a two-day program of work by nine Media Study students from the University of Buffalo. It is scheduled for Monday, April 10 from 5 pm to 9 pm and Tuesday, April 11 from 11 am to 9 pm at the UB Art Gallery (2nd floor), Center for the Arts (716-645-6912).

On display are two installations: “Untitled (After Deep Blue),” a prototype for a three-legged robotic partner by Nicholas Stedman and “Assistive Technology” by David Del Signore the design of a chair for disabled people.

The schedule for the two days is as follows:

Monday, April 10

5 pm - 9 pm "Rawing the News" is the opening performance of NET<3. Come with energy and bring your friends. "Rawing the News" raises questions about open news production online. This project by Loren Sonnenberg will feature indulgent food and free drinks.

Tuesday, April 11

11 am – 9 pm Installations on view <Untitled (After Deep Blue), MMO Times, and Assistive Technology>

5 – 6 pm “Gamics” workshop by David Hohusen describing the process of creating comic images using gaming systems with examples from his project, MMO Times. The piece aims to engage youth in daily news by combining the familiar aesthetics of games with news content. Hohusen strives to spur a discussion about politics among gamers.

6 – 7 pm Socially Networked Video, an electrifying performance by Jonathan Burow, Parker English, and Tom Peters, using a web-based environment that lets groups of interacting participants jointly compose live video, vote-by-vote.

7 – 7:45 pm Warm Not Cold is a live performance by Al Larsen, combining music, spoken word and video clips. Through a real-time exploration of the video, audio and text created for his weblog, Larsen works with the poetics of nature, public space and memory. He explores the gray areas between the WWW as a document and as a resource.

8 – 9 pm Enveloop is a critical presentation by Brian Diesel about the porting of open source culture into architecture. Diesel delineates the historical connection between techno-culture and architecture and puts forward the idea of 'modding architecture."

NET<3 is a two-day program featuring work produced by students of the "Data, Death, & Desire" collaborative media design class by Assistant Professor Trebor Scholz and Tom Leonhardt (Department of Media Study).

The UB Art Gallery is funded by the UB College of Arts and Sciences, the Visual Arts Building Fund, the Seymour H. Knox Foundation Fine Arts Fund, and the Fine Arts Center Endowment.
